Drone Tour, A Day with Matthew Houghton – The Elan Valley.

The Elan Valley Drone Tour

The Elan Valley is set in the heart of Wales in 72 square miles of breathtaking scenery with  6 dams and reservoirs perfect for some fantastic drone & photography opportunities.

The area can be tourist hot spot so if you are planning on staying  overnight, a quick Google search will bring up a host of B&B’s in and around Rhayader.

Our day will start in the town of Rhayader where we will set off around the Dams for the day. Your guide will be Matthew Houghton who knows the area well. We will head off in a full circle covering the dams along the way stopping at the best spots. The whole area is incredibly scenic providing you with great flying and photo opportunities.

A stop for lunch in the Elan Valley Visitors Center where  tea and coffee can also be purchased will be planned for, no need to bring packed lunches !

Spaces for this tour are strictly limited to 5, places will be allocated on a first come first served basis. See below for booking details.

We start the tour heading out of Rhayader along the Aberystwyth Mountain Road with the first stop along side the  Nant Gwynllyn river and waterfall. It is a small river but has a very large drop and looks fantastic. We will stop at the bottom where you can walk right up to the base of the waterfall and at the top where the valley opens up and the water drops down.

Our stop is a viewpoint overlooking the first reservoir called Cronfa Ddwr Craig Goch (bit of a mouthful) where we can get some wide open views of the valley and on a sunny day some great shots of the water.

The next stop will be Craig Goch Dam, this is one of the dams you can drive or walk across and is usually pretty quiet.

Next stop will be Pen y Garreg Dam, this one is a smaller dam and more enclosed with a valley and trees.

After some lunch we will head to the Garreg Ddu Dam this is another one we can drive over, there is also a little church we can get a few shots of. This Dam is partly submerged so you don’t always see the bottom of it but it’s still great to photograph as its nicely curved with a tower on it.

Our last spot of the day will be the Claerwen Dam, this dam is out the way of the other dams with breathtaking scenery all around. We are aiming to be here for the sunset !
